Q&A's About Environmentally Safe Tank Foam
  • I was told that a property could not be sold or new homeowner policies could not be written until the tank was removed.
  • It’s true in many cases a town or city will mandate that the tank removed before a new certificate of occupancy can be issued and insurance companies will require a tank to be removed before writing a new homeowner’s policy.

  • What's so special about our foam fill material? Why not just fill the tank with sand or gravel?
  • Foam is quickly becoming the most practical Underground Storage Tank (UST) fill material in the industry. It's lightweight (only 110 lbs. per 1,000 gal tank) which makes the tank easy to remove, if necessary, in the future. A gravel or sand-filled tank, on the other hand, can potentially become a costly liability for property owners because it is much heavier and more difficult to take out of the ground. Property buyers and their advisors are generally aware of this when purchasing a property. While most tanks may never need to be removed after they're filled, it simply makes good sense to use lightweight foam and not take chances.

  • Won't the tank "cave-in" over a period of time?
  • Most tanks take 20-40 years to develop a "pinhole" size hole from corrosion. With that in mind, it may take centuries for a tank to corrode and slowly collapse. Filling your tank with foam virtually eliminates the potential for even a corroded tank to "cave-in".

  • Does the EPA accept your brand of tank foam?
  • Yes... the EPA, the NJDEP and NYDER all accept our foam. Our solid foam material is non-toxic, non-corrosive, fire resistant and "inert" within the meaning of 40CFR280.71 To top

  • Is your tank foam safe for the environment?
  • Our foam products are environmentally "green". The foam is nitrogen based and contains no solvents or petrochemicals. If the UST needs to be removed in the future, our foam product can be transported to any regular landfill for final disposal without any special handling or treatment.

  • Which costs less: gravel, sand or foam fill?
  • We don't know of ANY other company who sells foam for less than Lombardo Environmental. Our foam prices usually meet, or beat, the cost of gravel and/or sand fill.

  • Which type of foam does Lombardo Environmental use?
  • Our UST Foam is premium quality, nitrogen-based organic polymer foam. It is a "closed cell" product. If a foam filled tank should need to be removed in the future, a closed cell foam material will minimize excessive water weight within the tank therefore making removal a less costly procedure. • How is the foam introduced into the tank?
  • We mix our two-part foam product on-site with water. The two totes within our vehicles contain Resin in one tote and a Foaming Agent/Hardener in the other. The products are released from the totes through a three-piece hose attached to our high-powered foam guns. The first hose contains the resin, the second hose contains the foaming agent/hardener and the third hose contains compressed air. All three elements meet for the first time at the tip of the gun to produce the "foam". The air produces a bubble within the foaming agent and is immediately encapsulated with the resin, which keeps the bubble from bursting. To top

  • How does the foam take to cure? Can I back-fill right away?
  • Our raw foam leaves the foam gun resembling "whipped cream" and begins curing in about 15 seconds. Once it leaves the gun, it does not expand or shrink. After it completely cures, its texture resembles a Styrofoam-like consistency. Once the tank is filled completely with foam, the tank opening can be covered with the manhole cover (or man-way cut-out) and backfilled immediately. To top

  • My tank is located in the backyard. Can your hoses reach that far?
  • Our hoses are 100+ feet in length and can reach most oil tanks, regardless of where they are located.

  • How far do your foam guns shoot the foam?
  • Our foam guns can "shoot" the foam about 35 feet. For larger tanks – if the tank man-way is located in the center – we can fill a 70' long tank without the need to enter the tank. Lombardo Environmental employs OSHA trained "Confined Space Entry" personnel to enter and fill just about any size tank.

  • How long does it take to fill a tank with foam?
  • Lombardo Environmental can pump at a rate of approximately 50 gallons+ per minute. A 1,000 gallon tank can be filled in less than 30 minutes. However, a complete job including prep work and clean-up can be completed in approximately 4 hours. To top

  • Can Lombardo Environmental foam tanks through the fill pipe without disrupting the soil and/or driveway?
  • As long as the tank has not leaked, Lombardo Environmental introduces the foam into the tank through the fill pipe, thereby not disrupting the surrounding surface area, provided, of course, it does not conflict with your local environmental regulatory requirements. Most local regulatory requirements allow tanks to be foamed through the fill pipe.

  • Why are Lombardo's prices so much lower than foam products I've seen in the past?
  • Two reasons: First, our raw materials are shipped in concentrated form and mixed with water on site. This minimizes shipping, warehousing and spoilage costs. Second, we save time on site. With the fastest delivery system in the industry, we can complete our services FAST and save you money.
